Introduction
- Music therapy develops communication, socialization, appropriate peer interaction, motor skills, and self-expression through musical interaction and exploration. One does not need any musical background or experience to be successful during treatment.
- Music is highly motivating and engaging while being relatable and attainable to those with autism.
- Music provides concrete, multi-sensory stimulation (auditory, visual, tactile).
- Instruments include piano, drums, guitar, ukulele, and voice.
Music Therapy Assessments
- A Board-Certified music therapist conducts assessments to understand the child’s behavior, motor skills, communication, and musical preferences.
- The child’s therapists (Behavioral, Speech, Occupational) are interviewed to obtain the most well rounded view of their strengths, weaknesses, goals, and objectives.
- After designing realistic and target objectives to address identified needs, the child will be placed in individual or group music therapy sessions.
